Chitipa United suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Red Lions at Zomba City Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the matchweek 7 of 2026/2027 FDH Bank Premiership.
The result marked Chitipa United's fifth defeat of the season, with their league position remaining unchanged.
The two sides battled evenly throughout the opening half, with both teams showing determination but struggling to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. Red Lions enjoyed more possession in the early stages and looked to apply pressure on the Chitipa United defence, while the visitors remained organised and threatened from set pieces.
Chitipa United won several corners during the first half and came close to creating openings, but the hosts' defence stood firm. Red Lions also pushed forward in search of a breakthrough, yet neither side could find the finishing touch as the teams went into the break locked at 0-0.
While clear chances were at a premium, Chitipa United found encouragement in the performances of several players. Godfrey KUyokwa and Lamson Lukali worked tirelessly in midfield to disrupt Red Lions' attacks and maintain the team's shape, while Kenson Mlenga was influential at right-back, regularly supporting the attack with overlapping runs. Mlenga also took responsibility for most of the visitors' set pieces, with goalkeeper John Banda contributing by delivering long free kicks from deep inside Chitipa United's half.
At halftime, Chitipa United made a change, introducing Vitumbiko Katuya for Gracious Simkoko as the technical panel looked to add fresh impetus to the side.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams working hard in midfield and limiting each other's chances. Red Lions gradually increased the pressure and made attacking substitutions in an attempt to break the deadlock.
Chitipa United also turned to the bench in the 73rd minute, bringing on Jellings Kayira and Olamba Ngese for Joseph Mbagha and Zenga Manda as they searched for a decisive moment.
However, the turning point came in the 75th minute when Red Lions were awarded a penalty after Shukulan Mussa was adjudged to have been fouled inside the penalty area. Mphatso Magaleta stepped up and converted from the spot to hand the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Chitipa United pushed for an equaliser during the closing stages, but Red Lions defended resolutely while continuing to pose a threat on the counterattack.
The match ended with further frustration for Chitipa United as Assistant Coach Sullivan Kandulu was shown a red card during the closing stages of the game. Following the final whistle, substitute Zenga Manda was also red-carded.
Speaking after the match, Head Coach Kondwani Ikwanga praised his players for their effort despite the disappointing result.
"The boys played with all their hearts today. It was simply not our day, but I am proud of the effort they put in," said Ikwanga.
The coach remained optimistic about the team's prospects for the remainder of the season despite collecting only six points from their opening seven matches.
"Yes we have only managed six points from seven games, but there is still a long way to go. There are 23 matches remaining and I believe we can achieve something if we continue working hard and learning from our mistakes," he added
Despite the defeat, Chitipa United will take positives from today's game and will look to bounce back in their next FDH Bank Premiership fixture, where they will host Kamuzu Barracks FC at Chitipa Stadium on 27 June, 2026 at 14:30.
